Veraguas Province, Panama

Located among the central provinces, bordered on the north by the Caribbean Sea, to the south by the Pacific Ocean, to the east by Colon, Cocle, Herrera, and Los Santos, and to the west by the provinces of Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro.  Its capital is Santiago.

Veraguas numbers 11 districts (Atalaya, Calobre, Cañazas, La Mesa, Las Palmas, Montijo, Río de Jesús, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Santiago, Soná).  The provincial name comes from the word "Veracua," which was the name used by the indigenous people to refer to this region.  Veraguas is the only province in the country to possess coast on both sides (Pacific and Caribbean), additionally is has a great diversity of flora and fauna in its jungles and mountains.  Due to its hydrographic and ocean resources Veraguas is able to offer to visitors: crystal clear rivers, lakes, and waterfalls that make for a pleasant stay in this region as well as beautiful beaches that classify as tropical paradises.

Santa Catalina beach is found in the Soná district, one of the most famous beaches worldwide for surfing, frequented by world renowned surf celebrities.

Another tourist attraction are the celebrations in Atalaya, home of the miraculous Jesus of Nazareth, one of the largest religous festivals in the country that attracts thousands of visitors the first Sunday of Lent.

One cannot leave the province without first visiting Isla de Coiba, the largest Panamanian island, rich in natural resources in its flora and fauna.  Coiba forms part of the Coiba National Park, created in 1991. Sport fishing and diving are some among the many activities that one can enjoy in Coiba's crystal clear waters and fine sand beaches.
