Los Santos Province, Panama

Located on the Azuero Peninsula, towards the southwest. Bordered on the north by Herrera and the Parita Gulf, to the south and east by the Pacific Ocean, and to the west by Veraguas. The capital is Las Tablas.

This province together with Herrera is considered the cradle of Panamanian traditions and folklore. This province has beautiful beaches such as Arenal, the Guarare port, Venado or Las Cañas, beautiful rivers such as El Tabuara and the Oria River. Attractive tourist destinations include El Peñon de la Honda, Isla Iguana (Iguana island), and the Belisario Porras museum, without forgetting to mention the famous carnivals of Las Tablas. Its a region with a warm climate, but temperate during the night due to fresh sea breezes. Los Santos is known for its hospitable people and festivals with parties that combine the Spanish influence with indigenous traditions like the "fiesta de Corpus Cristi" which is celebrated during the month of June each year in the town La Villa de Los Santos next to the colonial church San Atanasio. This is a picturesque community with adobe houses and tile roofs, a clear sign of their Spanish heritage. We recommend Cerro Juan Díaz for those interested in visiting an archaeological site.

The Guarare district hosts a renowned folkloric event called "Festival de la Mejorana." The event includes a wagon parade through the town's main streets with women dressed in polleras, the traditional, lacy gowns of Panama. This event coincides with the patron saint days of Our Lady of Mercy celebrated on September 24 each year. During this occasion great folklore and décima (sung poetry of 10 improvised verses) singers are invited to perform. The beaches of Bella Vista and El Puerto are famous. The spas of El Salto del Pilón and Salto del Mero are ideal places to refresh yourself from the heat.

Las Tablas, the capital of the province, besides its popular, packed Carnivals, offers natural spas like the Peña Blanca River, Valle Rico, and Oria. Cerro Canajagua is a center of ecological and adventure tourism. Neighboring communities make up the pollera artisanry center with their crafting of polleras and accessories. This art can be appreciated in Santo Domingo, San José, El Carate, La Tiza, and El Cocal. One will find no better occasion than at the Festival of the Pollera, concurrent with the patron saint days of Santa Librada, to admire the Panamanian national dress, the pollera and its jewels, with their inherent charm and grace.

The most important folkloric event of the Macaracas district is the well-known Auto de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Drama), celebrated during the first days of January in a representation of a religious dramatic event. This event is spiced up with popular parties and regional food. The festivities accompany the Folkloric Meeting of Canajagua where traditions and customs are highlighted in a local gala. The Pedasí district boasts beautiful beaches like El Toro, Los Destiladores, El Arenal, and Playa Venado, ideal for water sports.

The specialty of the Pocrí district is the handcrafting of attractive and comfortable hammocks. The Tonosí district is the most extensive of the province and one of the most fertile regions in the country. The Cambutal and Marinera beaches are home to nesting turtles during the months of September, October, and November. There one sees the arrival of up to three thousand turtles in one night.
