Colon Province, Panama
Colon is found situated on the Atlantic Coast of the Panamanian Isthmus.
The province of Colon is located on the Caribbean at the entrance to the Panama Canal, only 55 minutes from the Pacific by way of the highway and is the primary port for virtually all the imported and re-exported merchandise of the country. Colon is the second most important city in the country, but in terms of commerce it could claim to be the capital of hemisphere.
The largest port system of Latin America is found at the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. This port system located in Colon is made up of: the Colon Container Terminal (managed by Evergreen), Manzanillo International Terminal (operated by Stevedoring Services of the America), Panama Port Terminal (managed by Hutchison Whampoa), and the Colon Port Terminal. Currently the city boasts two new cruise ship ports: Colon 200 and Dock 6 in the Cristobal port.
In this city one finds the Colon Free Trade Zone, the most prominent free trade zone of the western hemisphere and the second largest center for imports and redistribution in the world. Any kind of product, including raw goods and machinery can be imported, stored, modified, distributed, processed, packed, repackaged, and then re-exported without being subject to customs taxes.
There are several options for travel to the city of Colon from Panama City: Buses leave every hour from the Albrook Bus Terminal (an approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes trip). National airlines offer daily flights to Colon from the Albrook airport. The train departs from the Corozal Terminal at 7:15am and returns from Colon at 5:30pm (a journey of approximately 1 hour).
In its territory the Colon Province has spectacular beaches on the Caribbean Sea where one can enjoy crystal clear water with white sand beaches, corral reefs, and many other surprises. Some of the best beaches are: Isla Grande, Nombre de Dios, Playa Langosta, and Palenque.
